In 2020-2021, the General Hospital of French Polynesia decided to design a seawater air conditioning system, the longest of its kind in the world (4,000m). In most of the interviews given about the project, the managers of the system admit that the critical aspect to the project’s success was the efficacy of the 400 welds involved because if even one developed a minor issue, like say, a crack, it would have jeopardised the entire project. All 400 welds were inspected using non-destructive techniques. And the system became fully operational at the hospital in July 2022.
Why is welding inspection so important? How harmful can a missed defect be? Structural integrity is the key to every industrial product and welding is the key to structural integrity. A shoddy inspection, which overlooks defects, porosity, or cracks in welds can result in expensive recalls, device failures, and possible legal repercussions.
There is a range of welding inspection techniques in the market today that deal with joint configuration, defects of interest, material type, and thickness. And one of the forerunners is inline 3D roof weld inspection.
High speed, accuracy, safety, and precision, are four aspects that are integral to the welding core part of several industries.
Inline 3d roof weld inspection can take place at speeds of up to 200mm per second. Weld inspection can define problematic areas in the welding process in relation to missing welds, shape and length, and porosity.
NDT welding inspection eliminates the need for manual inspection, which is prone to human error. Here, you can inspect welds for quality, strength, and safety with 100% accuracy as they are repeatable and a number of tests can be used together to correlate results.
Since the weld inspection uses an NDT, it is safer for personnel than manual inspection techniques.
Unlike manual inspection, 3D weld inspection delivers precise inspection results. A state-of-the-art inline NDT weld inspector allows the detection of surface and near-surface flaws with absolute precision.
3D inline weld inspection can be used in an array of welding applications. Blue Star E&E offers a wide range of scanners to address fabrication or maintenance weld inspection needs. Our solutions range from small pipes up to flat plates with the capacity to hold multiple probes for complete weld volume coverage. Versatility, dependability, and repeatability – that’s the forte of Blue Star E&E when it comes to weld inspection. Give our experts a call to learn more.
