The demand for high-precision material testing in industries such as electronics, aerospace, and biomedical applications is growing rapidly. Accurate measurement of material thickness and velocity is crucial for ensuring the reliability and efficiency of advanced sensors and prototypes. Ultrasonic testing provides a non-destructive method to evaluate these parameters, particularly for ultra-thin materials.

Challenges

The client required the inspection of ultra-thin materials used in advanced sensors and prototypes to measure their thickness, velocity, and energy loss using ultrasonic testing. However, several challenges complicated the process:

  1. Accurately determining the thickness of different materials.
  2. Measuring extremely low thickness samples (<1mm).
  3. Evaluating velocity variations in different crystal structures.
  4. Manual ultrasonic testing methods proved challenging due to operator dependency and time consumption.

Solution

To address these challenges, OmniScan X3, a state-of-the-art ultrasonic flaw detector, was used along with M208 & M205-RM delay line probes. The process included:

  1. Probe Selection & Calibration: The M208 and M205-RM probes were selected for their high precision in thin material measurements. The OmniScan X3 was calibrated for different sample types.
  2. Ultrasonic Inspection: The delay line probes enabled accurate measurement of material thickness and velocity by analysing the wave reflections from different layers.
  3. Attenuation Analysis: Energy loss during ultrasonic wave propagation was also measured to assess material properties.
  4. Data Interpretation & Validation: The collected data was analyzed to verify measurement accuracy, and results were compared against standard reference materials.
  • Achieved precise thickness measurement as low as 0.2mm using OmniScan X3.
  • Efficient velocity measurement across different materials.
  • Improved accuracy and reduced dependency on operator skill.
  • Enhanced inspection speed and reliability for advanced sensor applications.
